According to the CDC, more than 500,000 people are treated and approximately 300 people die each year from injuries while using a ladder. The result is an estimated $24 billion collective loss due to medical, legal, liability, and pain and suffering expenses. Although March is designated as Ladder Safety Awareness Month, we believe anytime is the right time to highlight the benefits of using RollaStep mobile ladders and work platforms if your team must leave the ground to get the job done at your facility.
Mobile Ladder Options
In contrast to a standard ladder, RollaStep mobile ladder stands are movable and self-supporting. Wide flat steps provide access to a small platform, generally intended for use by one person. Handrails provide stability while traveling up or down and toe boards and mid-rails ensure safety and compliance at various heights. The RollaStep Tilt and Roll model is large enough for an operator, tools, and parts, with room to spare.
Our RollaStep G Series provide height adjustable work platforms for safe, compliant access to level surface areas anywhere within your facility. A self-leveling platform allows your operators to work at the correct height for a job in multiple locations with a single platform. 24”(609.6mm) wide steps and a six sq. ft. platform offer a safe walk and work surface with ample room for an operator and equipment, plus a wide steel base for excellent stability.
Our RollaStep C Series cantilever work platforms help your employees work alongside railcars, tank trucks, and other tall industrial machinery. A durable steel base provides exceptional counterbalance, while the lightweight aluminum upper body provides ease of use for a single operator.
The RollaStep MP Series combines the convenience of a mobile rolling stair unit with a durable, stable fixed work platform. A large 9′ x 3′ work platform will securely accommodate multiple operators and necessary equipment and parts without compromising safety or efficiency. Powder-coated handrails, a full-size 45° rise stair stringer, and standard width and depth steps meet OSHA specifications for mobile work platforms, while the lightweight aluminum construction makes it easy for one operator to relocate safely.
Choosing the Safest Mobile Ladder
When choosing the proper mobile ladder and work platform the total weight must be determined. The weight of the operator must include clothing, boots, tools, protective equipment, and any other supplies in order to be accurate and safe. Safety note: A taller mobile ladder does not necessarily have a higher weight capacity. Also to be considered when choosing the proper mobile stair and work platform is the height at which the task will be performed. Measuring the distance from the ground to the place where the job will be completed without overreaching is advised to minimize the likelihood of a fall.
Preparing the Work Area for Safety
Inspect the work area carefully for clutter, electrical hazards, or obstructions. Mobile ladders should only ever be placed on solid, level surfaces, free of hazards such as water, ice, or oil. Be certain that others working in the area can easily identify the mobile ladder and work platform as an obstruction to be avoided. If necessary, use signs to alert others of the mobile ladder use, especially if it will be temporarily located in an unexpected location such as around a corner or behind a closed door. If your mobile ladder or work platform will be used outside, remember that rain, snow, wind, and ice can cause increased hazards and instability.
Care & Maintenance of Your Mobile Ladder
RollaStep mobile ladders are highly durable, but care should be taken to avoid damage during transport or due to improper handling. A thorough inspection at the time of purchase, after assembly, and periodically throughout its lifetime at your facility will ensure maximum safety for your employees. Handrails, toeboards, mid rails, guardrails, stairs, and platforms should be kept clean and free of oil, grease, or other slippery material. All components should be checked for damage or unusual wear regularly. When not in use, your RollaStep mobile ladder should be stowed carefully in a locked position in a clean, dry location away from intense heat and exposure to corrosive materials. Proper use, maintenance, and storage of your mobile ladder and work platform are essential and will keep workers safe and your business efficient and productive.
Mobile Ladder Safety – Top Tips
- Prevent falls by moving with intention, staying aware of your surroundings, and choosing slip-resistant shoes with excellent traction.
- Familiarize yourself with the proper use of your mobile ladder for optimal safety and stability. Read all associated manufacturer’s instructions and safety precautions and be sure all operators are properly trained before use.
- Position your mobile ladder on a solid, level surface close enough to the task at hand to avoid the need for overreach.
- Always lock the casters before use to ensure user safety while climbing the ladder. Never climb the ladder or mobile stairs with the locking mechanism disengaged.
- Do not use a mobile ladder while impaired due to illness, injury, exhaustion, or while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- Always keep no less than 2 points of contact with the mobile ladder, grasping handrails as available and keeping one foot on a step or rung at all times.
- Do not overreach or lean over hand or guard rails for any reason.
- Never move the mobile ladder or stairs while in use. Descend and fully exit the ladder before disengaging the locking mechanism and relocating.
- Climb the mobile ladder one step at a time. Do not jump or slide down.
- Do not use a mobile ladder in front of a door unless secured in an open position or locked.
- Avoid electric shock while using a metal mobile ladder and never use near open electrical circuits.
